I was at the interview this morning for a place on the Early Education and Childcare HNC. I set off at 7:45am to make it for 9:30am, I still managed to stroll into the initial group presentation late.
I had checked the map on the intraweb before setting off. I was on the number 2 by 8am and I was relying on either spotting the college or a street name I recognised from the map. 45 minutes later I am on a spidersweb of streets beginning with 'Stevenson'. I had passed a collegy looking building seconds ago but was unsure. Suddenly all the street names were Balgreen somethings and that building was getting smaller and smaller, so I got off despite not seeing anything from the map.
I started walking back towards the large building when it occurred to me to ask someone. It turns out that I was still miles away and should have stayed on the bus. I missed another bus but still made it to the college by 9:10am.
However, by this time I was touching cloth so instead of asking at reception if I was in the right place, I asked where the bogs were located. A massive relief later, I arrived back at reception. About 10 other people were waiting, it said the meeting point was the reception on the letter and I over heard the receptionist talking to someone else:
'interview at 9:30' 'Just take a seat'
So I sat down and waited, there was one burd and the rest guys. Strange, I thought to myself, for a course in the most female saturated career there are a hell of a lot of guys here. Then at 9:30am someone appeared:
'Can those waiting for the Sports Instructor Course come over here'
Everyone got up except me: Uh oh!!!
I quickly go up and ask if I'm in the right place.
'Sixth floor room 602'
Fucking idiot, why didn't I just go up and ask when I came back from my shit.
This is how I managed to be 10minutes late despite being 20 minutes early.
Poor first impression, imaginary references which I wrote myself showing I was a labourer and a barman (hardly relevant to the course), no record of qualifications as well as being the only man in the room. I was beginning to feel at a bit of a disadvantage.
I pulled it off though, unconditionally! haha what a coup...
I think what did it for me was when I was handing over the references, I preempted them by saying that they weren't at all relevant to the course and that I was going to ask my daughter's nursery teacher to write one because I often help the class with activities and story-telling. But that I didn't know if it was appropriate because I hadn't formally worked there. We talked further about this and the references where only really glanced at.
To be honest though it was a piss easy interview involving a written question:
What would you consider to be a successful afternoon in a playgroup you were leading?
All the girls were confused and started writing step by step instructions on what games they would play etc. While mine simply said 'Fun active learning without any serious accidents.'
The verbal questions weren't challenging enough to remember.
Next stage, Disclosure Scotland...
